ASR Policy

Use this screen to configure Automated Storage and Retrieval (ASR) policies for library branches.

ASR overview

The Automated Storage and Retrieval (ASR) Module in WMS Circulation acts as an intermediate system between Circulation and third-party devices that act as an automated storage system for a library's archives.

The ASR module has two primary purposes:

  • To keep the catalog that the ASR system knows about in sync with the catalog that WMS Circulation knows about.
  • To automatically request retrieval of items that appear on the Pull List.

Configuration

The ASR can be configured using the OCLC Service Configuration under WMS Circulation > Integrations > ASR Policy. One ASR configuration can be created per Institution Branch.

When the ASR Policy page is viewed, a list of all branches is shown along with the configuration status of each branch (either Configured or Not Configured).

To edit the ASR configuration for a branch:

  1. Go to WMS Circulation > Integrations > ASR Policy in the OCLC Service Configuration.
  2. Click the pencil icon in the Actions column for the branch to be configured.
  3. Enter the following information. * indicates a required field
Value 說明
Hostname* The hostname to connect to.
Port*

The port to connect to.

Note: Only accepts values from  1 to 65535. If a value of of this range is entered, an error message will display.

Type of ASR System*

The type of ASR System being used. Select from the following:

  • MCS connection: used with MCS ASR systems
  • MCS connection over SSL: the same as an MCS connection, but uses SSL for the networking to ensure that no sensitive data is transmitted over the internet
  • Dummy connection: used for testing purposes only.
Barcode Transformer

Used to indicate if barcode transformation is needed. Select from the following:

  • Marc 21: Transform an initial lowercase 'u' or 'b' to an uppercase 'U' or 'B' prior to sending to the remote ASR.

Note: Because WMS Circulation does not support an initial uppercase 'U' or 'B' on item barcodes, it is recommended that barcode scanners are configured to convert these uppercase 'U' or 'B' into a lowercase one when scanning into WMS.

  • None: Do no transformation of barcodes when sending to the remote ASR.

Rate Limit Period

The rolling period of time over which to do Rate Limiting of messages sent to the ASR system. See Rate Limit Count example below for more information.

Enter a value and select a Unit:

  • Minutes
  • Hours
Rate Limit Count

The maximum number of messages that can be sent during the specified Rate Limit Period.

Example: If a Rate Limit Period of 5 minutes is set, and a Rate Limit Count of 3 is set, then the following will occur when messages are sent to the ASR:

Message sent at 12:00:00 - Success. 0 messages in the last 5 minutes.

Message sent at 12:01:00 - Success. 1 message in the last 5 minutes

Message sent at 12:02:00 - Success. 2 messages in the last 5 minutes

Message sent at 12:03:00 - Failure due to rate limiting. 3 messages in the last 5 minutes

Message sent at 12:05:00 - Failure due to rate limiting. 3 messages in the last 5 minutes

Message sent at 12:05:01 - Success. 2 messages sent in the last 5 minutes.

Item Cache Period

The period of time between messages sent to request an Item Barcode is retrieved from the remote ASR.

Note: This is because an item is not removed from the Pull List until it is checked in to WMS Circulation by  library staff, which might be a duration after the ASR system actually physically retrieved the item from storage.
